The Comanche and Kiowa-Apache moved to a scattering of winter camps along the Canadian River in Northern Texas, near the ruins of Adobe Walls, a fortified trading post established in 1845 and blown up and abandoned three years later. Soon some of the younger men went out to raid into Colorado and New Mexico, leaving behind a sizable force of warriors to defend the camps.
Kit Carson
A Wild West legend, Christopher “Kit” Carson (1809–68was raised in Missouri and joined a wagon train headed west on the Santa Fe Trail in 1826. He became famous for his reliability, honesty, and knowledge of the land. Throughout the 1840s he acted as a guide for John Fremont on his many expeditions to the Pacific, which helped map the best routes for westward expansion. It also brought Carson into the national limelight and soon popular novels were being written about his exploits, both real and fictitious.
Carson got his first taste of large-scale battle in the Mexican–American War, where he distinguished himself. As a part of Brigadier General Stephen Kearny’s army, he got into a tight spot on December 6, 1846, when the column was surrounded by Mexicans at San Pasqual, about 30 miles north of San Diego. For ) three days the Americans fought off the Mexicans; but the situation was becoming increasingly desperate, so Carson and two others snuck through enemy lines and ran all the way to San Diego, where they got reinforcements and saved Kearny’s men.
After the war, Carson took up ranching in New Mexico. In 1854 he was appointed Indian Agent over the Apache and Ute, in which capacity he testified about the battle of Cieneguilla. At the onset of the Civil War, he organized volunteers for the Union in New Mexico Territory and fought at the Battle of Valverde in 1862. The following year he quelled the Navajo revolt, and in 1864 led a column against the Comanche and Kiowa-Apache at Adobe Walls. In 1865 he was commissioned a brigadier general, but his adventurous life had taken a toll on his health and he did not live much longer.
